Khamûl stared at his reflection in the burnished-glass mirror.

Flecks of grey were already appearing in his close-cropped dark beard.

He was a King of Men, a sorcerer of unparalleled power in his own land, maybe even one of the strongest in all the wide lands East of the Sea.

But even he could not stem the flow of time. Some things were beyond his power.

If he accepted the offer now, he would remain in his prime for many, many years,

He lightly stroked the naked flesh of the third finger on his right hand.

The time had come.

I guess he will remain for more years than he thinks, although whether it is in his prime, exactly, is debatable!

Absolutely. I doubt any of them expected how it would turn out for them.

I wonder how bitter they became when they knew the truth. Turning from proud, independent men into slaves to Sauron's will.

I'm fascinated by the ringwraiths and was delighted when we got the name of one of them.

Oh, interesting! Tolkien left such a massive legacy, didn't he?

I guess we can speculate - as you're doing here - on the processes by which the Nazgûl became what they were in LOTR (we see it at work in an extreme form with Gollum, and to a lesser extent, Frodo).

He did. This was one snippet of info I leaped on with joy, along with the names of the Blue Wizards. made my year when that came in Unfinished Tales.

That's a nice gap filler. What a truly tempting offer that must have been. (It really is frightening to see the flecks of gray and all the changes of body and mind as we age.)
