Ryan chucked the last of the kit into the van and slammed the door.

Another train-wreck of an op over. An innocent bystander killed because they hadn’t got there fast enough. Just an unfortunate sod in the wrong place at the wrong time who never even knew what had killed him.

The rest of the team had already left, heading for a pub and a drink to put the disaster of the day behind them. They hadn’t asked what he’d be doing later. He hadn’t said.

For him it ended the way a day at work always ended now.

Alone.

Thanks! I wrote it quite quickly and wasn't in the least bit happy with it, then switching the paras around suddenly made it work.

I love drabbles, but not when they just look like a paragraph. If it doesn't tell its own story it's not worthwhile, so I'm glad this one worked.

It's how I see the producers having written the soldiers in S1. There to do a job, but not part of the team, and clearly what happens to them doesn't matter. So I was in my Bitter Place!!

Oh! I take it this is after Amanda but before Stephen? This feels somewhere just after ep 1, how you set it up, with Ryan there but not with his own men yet. A stranger caught between SF guys who aren't his and a civilian team who only know him as SF.

Yep, spot on. That was exactly what was in my mind when I wrote it. With the team seeing him as nothing more than the hired muscle with a gun at this stage. Which is clearly all TFIC ever seemed to see him as. *sigh*

I was always intrigued with how they had introduced Ryan in ep 1. He had obviously been brought in specifically to accompany Nick through the anomaly, and I've sometimes wondered if he would have gone through anyway, even if Stephen had turned up - as the text seemed to infer that Ryan was there because Stephen was AWOL. But that would have meant that they'd managed to get hold of Ryan (who had a needed speciality, no less) on a moment's notice. Which seemed to be straining credability a little. *g*

And they had made such a statement with Ryan's arrival. Dark atmosphere, not in uniform, watched by the SF guys as he walked toward Claudia and Nick once he was in uniform. Everything screamed other to me.

Interesting. Yes, it very much looks like Ryan has been brought in to do a specialist job, into something that clearly isn't his usual team. God, I love his first appearance. *drools again*
