“You have got to be bloody joking, mate, fully booked since Easter.” Exasperation, amusement and complete incredulity all competed for gold on the landlord’s weather-beaten face.
“We really would be very grateful for somewhere to stay the night,” Claudia said in her best please-work-with-me-on-this voice.
“What are you, some kind of travelling circus?” His eyes roved over the group, settling on Connor’s hat, which wouldn’t have looked out of place on a nearby snowman.
“Home Office,” Claudia said, more weakly than usual.
The landlord’s eyes lit up. “So this’ll be on expenses then? Come on in. The lizard’s welcome, too.”
