“Ugly little bugger.” The RSCA inspector stared down at the creature paddling in the mud at the bottom of a large bucket on the foreshore of the Thames.
It stared back at him out of two sharp green eyes.
“No excuse for flushin’ ‘im down the bog.” The mudlark sniffed disapprovingly. “I’ve seen ‘is pawprints for the last few days, but this is the first time I’ve clapped eyes on ‘im.”
“Fancy adopting him?”
Her eyes widened as she stared over his shoulder. “I think ‘is mum might object, mate.”
And with that, she promptly legged it to the steps.
