#57. James Lester
“I don’t know whether to be flattered or insulted, captain.”
Ryan stood at parade rest in front of Lester’s desk, his face utterly impassive.
Lester bit back an irritated sigh.
He knew perfectly well that not keeping an eye on his drink in a sleazy bar had been stupid but discovering that Ryan had arranged for him to be tailed by a member of his unit had come as a surprise.
“You’re important to the anomaly project, sir. And Johnson and her vultures are already circling. The barman’s been sacked, by the way.”
“Thank you, Ryan. I appreciate your concern.”
#236. Tall, Dark and Handsome
The second time Lester saw his unofficial bodyguard was in a more salubrious watering hole, but he was still keeping a close eye on his drinks.
Whatever he’d been slipped in the last pub had given him the worst headache of his life. The diseased ferret’s nest in his mouth hadn’t been pleasant, either.
Tonight, he was doing nothing more foolish that getting out of an empty flat.
The soldier’s presence was unnecessary, although Lester had to admit that the young man was extremely easy on the eye.
Tall, dark-haired, vivid emerald eyes.
And deadly.
Almost certainly very, very deadly.
#1. Introductions
“We really shouldn’t keep meeting like this.”
“Sorry, sir,” the young soldier said, not sounding at all sorry. “Captain’s orders.”
“You should be with Captain Ryan chasing dinosaurs, not fussing over me.”
“They’ve just caught the latest one, sir. No casualties,” he added.
“Good.” Lester hesitated on the steps of his London club. “I don’t know your name.”
“Niall Richards, sir.”
“Call sign?” Lester had been around Ryan’s mob long enough to know that most of them never used their real names.
“Blade, sir.”
“Science fiction films or…?”
“Or.” Richards said, flatly.
A knife specialist. The best sort of bodyguard.
#26. Dining Out
The club would never earn a Michelin star, but the wine list was excellent.
Lester sat down in front of the fire with a drink, enjoying a rare moment of peace in a hectic day.
His meeting with the minister had gone as well as could be expected and, for once, Lester was feeling almost mellow.
On impulse, he stood up and walked back outside.
Richards was sitting on a bench, ostensibly looking at his phone.
“Would you care to keep a closer eye on me inside, instead? The food is tolerable.”
Richards looked surprised but stood up. “Thanks, sir.”
#242. All The Trimmings
To his companion’s evident pleasure, the special that night was steak and chips served with mushrooms, onion rings, tomatoes and peas.
Lester had only picked at food since his wife left, taking the children with her in a welter of recrimination (probably justified) about the hours he worked.
Cooking, which he’d once loved, had just become too much trouble but now he was hungry, and the chef could usually manage not to ruin steak.
Richards asked for his rare.
They ate in companionable silence and it made a pleasant change to eat out without a side order of excessive sarcasm.
#95. Something Wicked This Way Comes
“I don’t want to ruin your appetite, sir,” Richards murmured, “but Christine Johnson has just walked in.”
Lester looked thoughtfully at the steak knife on his plate.
The shadow of a grin crossed his companion’s face. “That’s what I’m paid for, sir.”
“James! Dining out with younger men? How very uninhibited of you.”
“Christine, how delightful to see you.”
Ignoring him, she undressed Richards with her eyes.
He stared back with a look that could have sliced steel.
To Lester’s amusement, she stepped back, startled.
A glass of red wine bloomed on her ivory silk blouse.
The waiter looked mortified.
#159. Food, Glorious Food
“I can recommend the chocolate orange mousse followed by a decent cognac,” Lester said, not bothering to disguise his amusement as Christine Johnson stalked out.
“Are you trying to get me in trouble with the captain, sir?”
“I very much doubt he’s concerned about your calorie intake, and if you’re anything like the rest of his lads, one glass of wine and a brandy won’t make any difference to your job performance.”
A smile crossed Richards’ face. “Can’t argue with that, sir.”
“You can reduce the number of sirs to one every other sentence, if you like.”
“Yes, s …”

Date: 2020-10-06 07:16 pm (UTC)That was sublime. From the original setup through managing to take Christine out without one sharp instrument showing, tho the last two lines, which made me giggle.
Loved it.
