“Thanks, Katie.”

Di Jamie Cross bagged an empty table while his sergeant fought her way to the bar.

The club was crowded even though the live music hadn’t started yet.

Cross was finally starting to relax, pint in hand, when a loud static crackle sliced through the noise and the room plunged into darkness.

Then a swirling, fractured ball of light burst into life on the stage and the crowd roared.

Jamie Cross muttered, “Fuck,” and reached for his mobile phone. The call went straight through.

“On our way!” Connor told him, cheerfully. “Get the beers in, mate!”
