“Do you do jigsaw puzzles as a hobby, Cutter?”

Nick Cutter looked up from under a tangle of thin plastic tubes looking like an eccentric cat’s cradle.

“No, why?”

Lester stared pointedly at the multi-coloured tangle as Nick attempted to slot another piece into place.

“Connections,” Nick declared. “It’s all about connections in time and space. And the more information we have, the more connections we can make.”

“And the pieces are starting to slot together?”

Nick nodded enthusiastically, and the structure above him wobbled like a jelly wearing an underwired bra.

“Careful, you’re about to unbalance the space-time continuum”
