Sitting huddled by the small fire on the last watch of the night, Connor tried to shut out the persistent chittering that started as soon as the sun slid above the horizon and didn’t die away until night fell.

The incessant noise grated on his nerves. He much preferred the cheerful, harmless sparrows that hung around the bushes outside Abby’s flat.

At least they wouldn’t rip your throat out given half a chance.

Although if they ever did get back home, he’d make damn sure they had plenty of bird seed to stop them deciding to emulate their distant ancestors.
