“Abby, where are we?” Connor’s voice had taken on a somewhat plaintive note.

“In a forest,” said Abby, staring at the trees.

Connor debated asking whether she had ever worked for Microsoft but a combination of commonsense and self-preservation fortunately won out. He wasn’t sure she’d entirely forgiven him yet for losing the GPS down an animal burrow.

A little while later, he broke the silence again. “Abby, will we starve?”

The look she gave him said, plainer than any words, that if anyone starved, it wouldn’t be Abby.

Connor tried his best to look endearing, and inedible.

He failed.
