Two small figures stumbled amongst the jagged rocks, picking their way as best they could, their grey cloaks shielding from unfriendly eyes.

When night fell, they huddled together under an overhanging cliff, unable to go on.

Sam drew his companion’s head down onto his lap and carded his fingers through a mop of unruly dark hair.

“Am I still a confounded nuisance, Mr Frodo?” he asked in a soft voice.

Frodo looked up, his eyes shining in the faint silvery light of the moon. “You most certainly are, but you are, and always will be, my confounded nuisance, Sam Gamgee.”
