“Grandad will be here soon, sweetheart.” Becker stroked Kay’s soft fur and lightly touched the pup’s dry nose.
His youngest had a nasty cough and he’d been at home for two days, but he was needed back on shift now.
He glanced at the clock on the wall. Allan was never late …
Ten minutes later he was feeling decidedly twitchy, then he heard a a key in the lock and footsteps on the stairs.
“Thanks, Dad! Don’t know what we’d do without you!”
“Your father has a headcold,” the Colonel announced. “I’ll stay with Kay, Hilary. Off you go!”
