“Stay together!” Arvedui’s voice rose above the wailing of the tempest. “Hold fast to cloak or belt as links in a chain and let no one founder in this murk!”

Wind whipped fresh snow into a frenzied white dance, slowing their headlong flight from their last stronghold on the North Downs.

Once off the stony heights they mounted and urged their horses into a run, braving the storm, forging through the drifts, each taking a turn to cleave a path onwards.

North, ever north.

What end awaited them he could not tell.

For now, it was enough simply to flee.
