Danny stared up at a pitch-black sky, myriad bright stars arrayed in patterns he didn’t recognise.
Maybe the constellations had changed over time or maybe he was at a different latitude.
They hadn’t covered astronomy at police college.
Nearby, the tribe chattered away in grunts and hand-signals. Their night vision was far superior to his own and they were as comfortable by night as by day.
Abruptly, the group fell silent, arms wrapped around their hairy bodies as they huddled close, afraid.
In the sky, the stars now seemed to be moving, falling to earth…
Danny shivered, despite the beauty.
