“I won’t let you down again, professor,” Connor vowed, his dark eyes radiating sincerity.
Nick Cutter had dealt with students long enough to pick up the almost imperceptible tremor in the young man’s voice.
He already regretted his harsh words to Connor, but this situation was no joke and he needed people on the team he could trust implicitly.
“I know you won’t.”
The quiet words brought a flush of pride to Connor’s face and already he was standing straighter.
Nick just hoped he was making the right decision.
And, finally amidst fire and smoke, his trust was amply repaid.
