“Now!” Dwalin cried.
Axes cut through ropes and with a great rumble, rocks rained down on the Easterlings, crushing skulls and breaking limbs.
The men of Dale who had taken refuge in the stronghold let fly their arrows.
The attackers fell back in disarray.
Below, in the quiet, deep places of the mountain’s cold heart, the bodies of Dáin Ironfoot and his friend and ally King Brand were laid reverently to rest, covered in fine silk.
The battle before the mountain had ended.
The siege had now begun.
Yet while the great Gate of Erebor held, no enemy could prevail.
