The contents of the wastepaper bin dropped into the black plastic sack with a rustle and a faint smell of banana skin.

A small amount of floor space still showed, tiny islands in an endless sea of chaos. She would need to vacuum carefully, to avoid upsetting the endless piles of journals.

The desk was out of bounds, it always had been, but her eye was drawn by something new. Something that stared up at her from a face without eyes, as it oozed from a large, spiral shell.

She screamed. She’d heard of pet rocks, but this was ridiculous.
