The face that stared at him from the mirror looked the same.

But the mirror looked different; now a narrow wooden frame instead of wide metal one.

His key still worked in the lock, that had been a relief.

The same red rug, but very different lounge furniture.

Something they had done in the Permian had sent ripples through time, and time itself had changed.

Claudia Brown had vanished without trace.

But he was still Professor Nick Cutter.

The same Professor Nick Cutter who’d walked into the anomaly.

He clung hard to that belief.

He needed something to cling to.

I think the small ones would probably been even more unsettling, as I imagine he kept finding minor differences.
