Claudia glanced down, hating the deceptively slow movement of the minute hand as it crept around the face of her watch, always chased and overtaken by the nimbler second hand.

Ten minutes, she’d said. No more.

She trusted Ryan to bring them back safely because that’s what the quietly spoken, hard eyed soldier had always done.

But time was ticking inexorably away.

Then the anomaly expanded.

Two men stumbled through.

Two when there should have been three.

“Cutter’s not coming back,” Stephen gasped. “Said he was sorry.”

Claudia wasn’t sorry.

Relief coursed through her.

Now Stephen never needed to know.
