“Why has the atrium been transformed into some sort of open plan aviary, Ms Maitland?”

Abby glared. “Cage door came open when I slipped on a patch of spilled tea some idiot hadn’t mopped up.”

Lester winced.

“Yes, I’ve filled in the Accident Book. Yes, I’ve filled in an Escape of Potentially Dangerous Creatures form.”

She held out some raw chicken.

One of the small brightly coloured birds landed on her thick leather glove, ripped at the meat viciously and was promptly shoved back into the cage.

“What the hell are they?” Lester demanded, aghast.

“Hungry,” Abby replied. “Very hungry.”
