“Think of it as a summer holiday,” Lester said with a smile that put Stephen in mind of hungry stethacanthus, that is if a 350 million year old shark had taken to wearing a Savile Row suit with a very fetching red silk tie.

“You’re sending me to Blackpool in August. What kind of holiday is that?”

“A crap one,” Nick commented unhelpfully, earning a grimace from Stephen and a grin from Connor.

“I’m sure you and our perpetual student will have a splendid time.”

Connor’s face promptly fell.

“Off you go,” Lester chivvied. “Rumours won’t hunt themselves, you know.”
