The ping of simultaneous WhatsApp messages arriving in the breakroom went unnoticed by Nick Cutter, who breezed in muttering about faceless bureaucrats and moronic politicians, made himself a coffee then breezed out again.

Three hours later, a message from Abby popped up on the innocuously named ARC Weather Chat: Amber warning. Watch yourselves, lads.

This time, the door flew open and Nick stomped into the kitchen yelling incomprehensible Scottish imprecations, before stomping out with yet more liquid caffeine and a thunderous expression on his face.

Ryan quickly typed: Red warning. Immediate evacuation advised.

Stephen: Black Swan, ASAP
