Nick twisted in the water, groping for cut hose as precious air flowed out, emptying his tanks and taking the life from his lungs with every treacherous bubble.

A hard nose smacked into him, the force of the blow knocking out more air.

Giving up the unequal struggle, he gripped the safety rope and tugged as hard as he could, hoping Stephen would respond.

Nick fought to hold his breath, his lungs straining and starting to heave.

One painful gasp and they would fill with water.

Nick clung to the rope and clung even tighter to his faith in Stephen.
