The block of flats looked as immaculate as Nick remembered; all clean red brick and gleaming chrome, with neatly kept plant pots on balconies.

When Nick finally reached his destination, he felt like he’d taken a blow from a cricket bat to his stomach.

He’d always joked about Stephen’s obsessive tidiness at home, but there was nothing funny about the thick layer of dust that coated every surface.

The words clean me scrawled in Stephen’s distinctive writing across the kitchen work surface.

Nick stared at the curt the instruction left in the dust.

A cold shiver danced down his spine.
