Lester strode into the Home Office conference room and settled into his usual chair.
The one opposite the clock.
A quick check with his 1968 Vacheron Constantin Disco Volante wristwatch (a name that always made the easily amused Jon Lyle snigger and point out that James Peregrine Lester had never been near a disco in his life) confirmed that the cheap Ikea wall clock was as depressingly accurate as ever.
The team had been in the field for three hours, 24 minutes, 39 seconds and he had received no updates.
He hoped, as ever, that no news was good news.
