A well-manicured finger traced the shape of his face, mapping bones, stroking the day old stubble on his cheeks, leaving Stephen wondering how she found the time for a very obvious grooming routine.

Possibly some enterprising soul had opened a hair and nail bar in the Permian.

Helen smiled, displaying perfect white teeth, putting Stephen in mind of a juvenile gorgonopsid he’d recently needed to tranquilise.

Maybe they had dental hygienists in the Permian, as well.

“You still love me, don’t you, Stephen?” Helen purred, making the words more of a statement than a question.

Stephen adroitly avoided her eyes.
