“There were women and children in there, Ryan. They are already changed beyond recognition by an invariably fatal, unbelievably infectious disease. They will all die in unspeakable agony within the next 24 hours. We cannot risk this outbreak spreading any further.”
“Children, sir…”
“Yes, children, Tom. If I could save them, I would, but we know that’s not possible. You know that’s not possible.”
Ryan changed channel on his radio. “Lethal force. Make it merciful.”
He fired the first shot.
