Nick Cutter slumped into his scruffy leather chair. “Nothing. Absolutely nothing.”

“They’re not even investigating?”

“She’s an adult. She can do what she wants.”

Stephen’s hand hovered awkwardly over Cutter’s shoulder then abruptly he turned away and flipped the switch on the kettle in the standard British response to emotion.

Tea, two sugars.

“Have you eaten?”

Cutter looked puzzled, as though he’d just been asked to explain the purpose of a T. rex’s arms.

Stephen tipped half a packet of Jaffa Cakes onto a chipped plate.

Cutter gave him a tired smile. “Thanks, lad.”

Both men retreated uneasily into repression.
