“Abby, someone’s keeping a dire wolf as a pet!” Connor’s stage whisper echoed around the small coffee shop.

The small coffee shop that was more than half filled with an exceedingly large, exceedingly hairy dog.

Abby smiled apologetically at the dog’s companion, who by the amused look on her face was well used to that kind of reaction. “He never had pets as a child,” she confided.

Connor eyed the dog warily.

The dog eyed Connor’s croissant hopefully.

“Oh Tannenbaum, stop scrounging, you little devil!”

“Little?” Connor practically whimpered.

“He’s just a great big softy.”

The dog’s hopeful look intensified.
