The light had gradually faded, leaving Sir James Lester sitting alone in a darkened office, an envelope still held firmly in both hands.

He’d read the contents a dozen times. He didn’t need the light now.

They’d always known it might come to this. Hell, they’d even talked about it on those occasions when the demons wouldn’t be banished by the usual methods.

But nothing could make this any easier.

He felt eyes on him in the darkness and looked up.

From the shadowed doorway, Ryan said softly. “I’ll believe it when I see his body, sir, and not before.”

Obviously, Ryan is right, yes? Except the prompt is 'denial', so Ryan could just in denial about it. But there's no warning for character death, so I am going to firmly believe Ryan's right and the future will hold lots of delighted-you're-alive sex rather than a funeral.

But it is an excellent drabble, even if (or especially because) distressing.
