“There are 13 rounds in each magazine,” Stephen’s voice was ragged but he was determined to finish the lesson, whether Nick wanted it or not. “We’ve got four full clips left. That’s 52 bullets, then we’re done, Cutter, so they all need to count.”

Nick frowned, trying to hand the weapon back.

Stephen shook his head and continued, ignoring the pain. “Every time you fire, the slide at the top will spring back and a cartridge will eject sideways. It’ll make you jump. Just don’t drop the gun, OK?”

Nick nodded. He could do this. Their lives depended on it.

Actually that's just inspired me for an idea for ficlets. People post small extracts from the middle of a fic and other people write their own story around it? Not exactly a full remix, but quick fic.

I agree totally, and as was mentioned further up above, protecting Stephen would give Nick one hell of a motivation to have to use a gun.

Great conveying of their situation in just those few lines. You might have bunnied me for a follow up drabble or scene to it or a similar situation, but I'll of course run it past you first, and I'm still hoping that you'll write more of it too!!
