Connor rolled over, pulling the badly cured hides round him, hating the smell, but desperate for their warmth.

Every bone in his body ached and his head felt fit to burst, but for the first time in nearly a week, the thought of food didn’t make him heave.

The fire flickered in the evening twilight.

James Lester leant against the cave wall, filthy and exhausted, staring intently at the skewered meat, determined to cook this batch without burning it.

Roast alphadon was not the most appetising of suppers, but it was all they had and it was better than starving.
