Darkness visible.
Nick’s English teacher used to use that to illustrate an oxymoron, but if Nick ever got to meet the man again, which seemed unlikely given his current circumstances, he would happily put him right.
The darkness was so absolute he could feel it on his skin and practically taste it on his tongue.
Only one thing anchored him to reality. Stephen’s hand, holding his. Warm and alive.
They were not dead and they still clung to hope, however slender it might be.
Nick just wished he could stop the rest of that damned verse running through his head.
