“Captain Ryan didn’t make it, and all his men are dead. Whatever happens, nobody goes back through.” Nick’s voice held a mixture of sadness and resolve.

Good men had died. There was no easy way of breaking news like that.

His eyes fell on a burly, black-clad figure, staring at him in shock. Nick’s heart raced and he stared back in disbelief.

Ryan stepped forward, frowning. “Professor … ?”

And then Nick’s eyes took in the gleaming metal collar encircling the soldier’s neck.

The next few shocks that came his way proved no easier to come to terms with, either.
